Ecology is simple and complex simultaneously. The pieces are simple: "The sun shines and gives energy which grass uses to grow; cows eat grass." But the details and further relationships are complex: how much energy does the cow get from all the grass contains? Why is some "lost?" When a cow dies where does the cow's material and energy go - since grass does not eat cows!?
5.1 Communities and ecosystems (5 hrs)
Communities, made in interacting populations, with abiotic environment make up ecosystems. From the get-go this story talks about relationships: nesting terms population < community < ecosystem, etc; flow of material and energy. Being able to zoom in and out is paramount! Know definitions, but be able to thread them together.
